Derek’s Newsletter - Virgo - Late August/September 2022
Hello and a very warm Welcome all readers of my Monthly Newsletter!
We have now reached the sixth sign of the Zodiac, the sign of VIRGO and the time of the year, in our northern hemisphere, when we gather in the harvest. VIRGO is a Zodiac sign and a time of the Year of great fertility. What we planted in the fields has now become ripened – and as the old saying goes, what we have sowed we are now reaping. You can recognize this physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
We are living in a time of crises, war, threats of war, famine, refugee crises, climate change and the list goes on & on – and crises challenges us both as individuals and collectively as humanity, to take decisions, to make choices based upon our value system. We are preparing for the great shifts in consciousness as we move closer to 2025!
We are experiencing the gradual birth of a new world order, a new civilization that will emerge from the dissolution of the old – but what are we “birthing”? What are we harvesting from our past activities?
The sign Virgo is normally depicted as the Earth Goddess and the Virgin Mary is the symbol of any human being who is able to give birth to him/herself. Thus he/she becomes a twice-born, or “reborn” person.
Welcome to this VIRGO NEWSLETTER &

The consciousness of Woman is now ready to become impregnated with the energy which will awaken her to the true meaning of her femaleness.
In Virgo the energy is internalized and the process of integration is one of self-purification and constant self-improvement. These are keywords that anyone born in Virgo will easily resonate with.
As the Tibetan Master DK writes about Virgo in “Esoteric Astrology”: “…concerns the whole goal of the evolutionary process which is to shield, nurture and finally reveal the hidden spiritual reality.”
Wonderful words, wonderful energies, to shield, nurture & reveal - let’s take a closer look.
In Leo, humanity anchors the sensitivity to the Higher Self through the intense focus of the multi-levelled self-awareness which characterizes this sign. It is in Virgo that these processes of externalization of the Soul onto the physical plane are undertaken. In this respect, Virgo is the sign of the “Hidden Christ” as it represents the inner gestation & growth of the Soul force within each of us.
Virgo is giving birth to Divinity. It has these three great characteristics: it shields, nourishes and reveals the Divinity within the form.
Let us expand a little more on this.
To shield the Divinity within ourselves and within others, we must try to:
Affirm Divinity within all humanity, including ourselves;
Reject all feelings of jealousy & hatred toward any person;
Not gossip & criticize people or create doubts in their minds about creative powers latent within them;
Create right conditions in life so that the Inner Divinity is not subjected to attacks;
Not evoke personality reactions, as much as possible; and
Prevent those existing conditions which will retard the development and evolution of the Divine Spark within.
To nurture the Divinity within ourselves and within others, we must try to:
See beauty within ourself and within others:
Appreciate the expression of virtue;
Inspire people with lofty ideas, visions and examples in our lives;
Express beauty, harmony, goodness and truth in all our actions, expressions and thoughts;
Raise the standard of morality and education;
Provide lofty music, literature and other arts created on higher levels of consciousness which are capable of imparting spiritual vitality and the urge to serve and sacrifice.
To reveal the Divinity within others and within ourselves, we must try to:
Trust and show faith in their inner light;
Create those conditions in which they will bloom freely as spiritual beings;
Inspire them for world service;
Challenge them for heroic acts;
Show them world need;
Cooperate with all their creative and constructive actions; and
Create opportunities for them to see their own beauty, their own Self.
Virgo, as the Goddess of the Harvest, finds herself in a very bountiful area of the heavens. The constellation of Virgo is about 46 degrees in length and is therefore one of the longest of the zodiacal signs. Within her boundary there are over 500 nebulas. This abundance of latent energy is made manifest by the practical resourcefulness of those individuals born under her rays.
The Virgin is usually depicted in an angelic form, her two wings extending out into space. In her hand she holds a shaft of wheat or an ear of corn, symbolic of the fruitfulness of Woman. The shaft of wheat is represented by one of the brightest stars in the sky – Spica which the ancient Hindu astrologers called the Pearl.
This highly placed lady even has her own jewels then i.e. the Diamond of Virgo. This is a 4 star constellation which consists of Denebola (the tail of Leo), Spica, the Pearl, then Arcturus (an extremely brilliant golden-yellow star) and Cor Caroli (a double-bodied white & lilac star) – a fitting gem for the heavenly maiden.
Affirmation:
“I look inward, seeking the guidance of my Higher Self,
as I journey toward deeper understanding and enlightenment.”
Tarot Key 9: THE HERMIT
The Hermit is the Tarot card assigned to the zodiacal sign Virgo.
The Hermit stands alone on a mountaintop, shining his lantern so that those below may find their way to where he lovingly and patiently awaits their ascent. Because the lantern is held in his right or conscious hand, this refers to the fact that it is kindled by his deliberate efforts. He has plotted his own way up the mountain.
The Hermit’s light is a symbolic extension of his own inner light or Wisdom. The lantern is illuminated by a blazing 6-pointed star formed by two interconnected triangles.
This shows that God/Goddess reaches down to us, the descending triangle, as does the Hermit, while we reach up to our Higher Self and truth, symbolized by the ascending triangle.
The star is also suggesting the blending of the male & female principles of self-consciousness & subconscious respectively. In metaphysical symbolism, the upward pointing triangle indicates the mental elements of fire & air, while the downward pointing triangle signifies the emotional elements of water & earth. This symbol of union and synthesis informs us that thinking and feeling must be combined to achieve wisdom.
It also suggests that when the Hermit is embodied in human form, that individual is a Wise One or Master of Worldly life.
The word “Hermit” comes from the Greek, eremites, meaning “one of the desert” and is possibly derived from the contemplative journeys Moses and Jesus took into the desert. It seems that most serious seekers must periodically journey to solitary places to aid their quest for wisdom, insight and inspiration. In all cultures and religious groups throughout time, there have been Wise Ones who have chosen to withdraw from the outer world into the solitude of the inner one. They are not dropouts, nor are they fleeing from life’s responsibilities. Having completed their worldly business, such persons have earned their retirement.
This is stated by the Hermit’s being clothed in a grey robe, the colour of Wisdom, (remember the film & Gandalf the Grey?) the 2nd. Sphere Chokmah (“Wisdom”) on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life – and being numbered 9, the final single digit in our numbering system, indicating achievement, realisation, perfection and accomplishment.
And if you look at the Hermit carefully, you can see how his body actually takes on the configuration of the number 9.
This completion is also noted by the fact that he holds his staff in his left or subconscious hand, substantiating his assimilation process further. In addition this is shown on the Tree of Life where the ninth Sephirah, Foundation or Yesod, deals with the assimilation of knowledge into one’s automatic consciousness. To conclude, the number 9 reminds us that our experiences may serve as a support to both ourselves and others.
The evolved Hermit has withdrawn from the world figuratively, not literally. He participates in the world, but is not subjugated by it. He is not lonely because he receives the satisfaction of living discerningly and joins the company of others who are doing likewise.
The Hermit is associated with the Mutable zodiacal sign Virgo. This sign governs the small intestine and pancreas, which break down, assimilate and separate waste products from nutrients in order to nourish the body. This process illustrates the analytical, dissecting and utilitarian aspects of the Virgo nature.
The Virgo personality says: I utilise, serve, harvest, dissect, worry and sympathise. I’m selective, modest, serious, industrious, health-conscious, humane and adept at details. And with these traits arises the tendency to be overly analytical, sometimes preoccupied with trivia, and the inclination to be a perfectionist and set unattainable standards for both oneself and others. In Virgo’s industrious dedication to serve, there is sometimes the danger of becoming so enmeshed in a cause or ideal that they fail to enjoy their accomplishments, as well as life in general.
One of their lessons is to acknowledge the greater order of life – the perfect order of the Universe – to free themselves from worry, excessive sympathy and over-attachments to the fruits of their labours.
Crowley’s Thoth Tarot version of Key 9: The Hermit
The card shows the perhaps best-known archetype of the Wise Old Man (Merlin, Taliesin, Abraham etc.) as Seeker and Guide. He represents that phase of life, not being distracted by the externals, where we must become clear within.
Through his turning away from the world, he directs his interest to the origin of all things – to the World Egg or “Orphic Egg”, embraced by the great snake Ophion.
The Hermit personifies powerful inner concentration. In doing so, he penetrates into the mysteries and into the deepest abysses (The Hound of Hell). As Merlin, he is the servant of the Moon Goddess, whose holy number of three times three he bears as the ninth card.
In his search, he has not even stopped at the threshold of the Underworld, as indicated by the 3-headed Hound of Hell Cerberos at his feet, the Guardian of the Gates to the Greek Underworld.
In his hand he holds a lamp in the form of an octahedron (having 8 sides), its inner sun shedding light on the mysteries. The eight indicates two worlds flowing into each other. Eight-sided stars and octagons are considered the transitional form between the earthly square and the divine circle.
They thereby show the utmost that we humans can achieve when we strive towards the divine (globe) from the earthly sphere (cube).
The Old Wise Man is the main aspect of Thoth, the Egyptian God of Wisdom. Many persons perceive him to be the Father of the Tarot, which is why Crowley named his cards, “The Book of Thoth”. One old tradition tells of how he appeared on a lotus blossom at the beginning of all time, then laid the cosmic egg as a bird, and so created the world.
In Crowley’s unique Tarot image for The Hermit, we find that instead of the traditional staff, it is replaced by the spermatozoon or snake staff. Perhaps the most intriguing image on Crowley’s Tarot card is what appears to be a wriggling sperm cell in the lower left corner.
The spermatozoon in the bottom portion of the card corresponds to the procreative impulse from which everything can come into being, as long as it find fertile ground.
All the 22 Major Trump cards of the Tarot are associated with one of the 22 Letters of the Hebrew Alphabet. The 9th. Key is The Hermit and the zodiacal sign Virgo, which is identified as the letter YOD, the craftsman of the Hebrew alphabet, because from this smallest letter, looking like a thumb print, all the other letters are created.
As the hidden seed of the Hebrew alphabet, Yod (meaning = the hand) symbolizes the mystery of sperm, the hidden seed, and a central secret of fertilization.
It is thus THE HERMIT that brings light into dark places, and the womb is a very dark space. The Hermit has the penetrative power to awaken the potential lying in the darkness. It is for this reason that Crowley identified the archetype of The Hermit as the supreme masculine Father force, due to various Kabbalistic reasons. “In this Trump” he wrote, “is shown the entire mystery of Life in its most secret workings”.
In the next section of our Newsletter I invite my Readers to turn inward and do the 5 exercises that will bring you closer to the qualities of The Hermit.
The sign Virgo loves training & re-training so here is your opportunity.
5 Exercises for Key 9: THE HERMIT
The Hermit holds the Lamp of Truth. He represents the Way Shower, illuminating the path for the Seekers of the Light. He is the source of all personal wisdom and the goal of every endeavour.
You have travelled far and you have seen much.
You are walking in the dark, your path covered by shadows.
You have taken the withdrawn and introspective way in search of something that has been hidden.
The Hermit stand among the shadows.
He has found inspiration, wisdom and peace of mind.
He has found contact with his Soul.
He says to you:

I see___________________________________________________
I go____________________________________________________
I have__________________________________________________
I will ___________________________________________________
I must __________________________________________________
I will follow ______________________________________________
The secret message The Hermit tells you is:

You pick it up.
It shines upon the world, lighting everything in a new way.

how you feel in terms of immortality & divine wisdom.
Perhaps the lamp holds a message that can give you new
insight and understanding.
Exercise 3: The Cloak
Near the lamp you find a cloak.
You put it on and you discover that it fits you perfectly.
As the cloak envelopes you in its deep folds:

How do you feel about the cloak?
Through this exercise you may discover the way you feel about
withdrawing and hiding …..It may seem threatening to you,
and you may want to consider the advantages of having
time and space for yourself away from the world.
Or, the cloak may be welcome and feel safe.
Do you withdraw a lot?
Can you find reasons for your need to hide?
As with all of these exercises, you may find some insights
into your own true nature in your responses to the questions.
Exercise 4: The Staff
Resting against a tree, you find a staff.
It is sturdy and you find that it fits your grip.
As you hold the staff in your hand, you realize:
You feel ________________________________________________

What are your feelings about your journey or pilgrimage?
Will you take up the staff and proceed?
Or would you rather put it down and turn around?
Exercise 5: The Cloak, the Staff and the Lamp

to deeper personal understanding?
Do you have some negative responses? If so, can you find what
has been blocking you?
Or are you eager and confident as you proceed along your journey?
Do you have new insights to help you understand who you are
and why you feel the way you do?
The Keeper of the Sacred Flame
The Asteroid VESTA
When Pluto was declassified as a planet and relegated to “dwarf planet” status in 2007 by the Astronomical Community, the largest Asteroid Ceres was promoted to a new planetary status – and since that time we have witnessed the increasing use of the major Asteroids, Ceres, Pallas, Juno & Vesta in horoscope interpretation.
In a previous Newsletter I devoted space to explore the ancient Greek Mysteries and the increasing presence of the asteroid CERES onto the world scene. The Mother Goddess CERES (Greek Demeter) depicted with a sheaf of wheat in her hand has obvious links with the sign Virgo and agriculture. In the story of the abduction of her daughter Persephone by Pluto down into his underworld kingdom and the resultant famine on the planet as she looked for her missing daughter, we have currently another obvious example of Ceres influence on modern society.
Ukraine has functioned as the bread-basket to the world, and now, as we reach an incredible 6 months of Russian war upon this sovereign state, we are experiencing a global shortage of grain. The continent of Africa is one of the main victims of this tragedy, yet the current circumstances affect all.
And yes, there are vast cargo ships beginning to leave Ukraine laden with the golden produce of the land to feed a hungry world, but it draws attention to how vulnerable we really are to such castastophes. And it doesn’t stop here. The continuing draught throughout Europe is having a disastrous effect upon crops & successful harvest at this time of the year, so once again Ceres makes her mark on our societies.
Ceres has another face and that involves the mysteries of death and grief which obviously exist on both sides of these warring parties, Russia and Ukraine. Although Russia does not disclose their casualty list, British & American Intelligence estimates that a staggering 70,000+ Russian soldiers have lost their lives in what Putin’s calls a “special military operation”. It is so tragic that the Russian media are now asking for volunteers to join the army with the lure of both big sums of cash and land for their commitment. Yet as many mothers of dead sons reveal, with little training these recruits are sent to the front line and then are sent back home in a body-bag. Money and land and national sacrifice – is this worth Putin’s glorified vision of a new Empire?
The Asteroid VESTA
During mid-May the asteroid VESTA moved into it’s first opposition aspect to my Leo Sun and now at the time of writing this VIRGO Newsletter, VESTA is in retrograde motion at the end of Aquarius and therefore in exact opposition for the second time to my natal Leo Sun at 29½-degrees. This opposition aspect will continue to be in effect right through until the early part of November 2022, and then it will enter the sign Pisces. That means for no less than 6 months, half this year, the asteroid VESTA, the Keeper of the Sacred Flame, will be in contact with my fiery Leo Sun degree. On a personal note, I have dedicated this year for writing and getting my legacy down in print. So yes, I produce a 30+-page Newsletter every month to distribute the esoteric teachings and I write books.
The first volume of my Triology bringing together my 3 great loves, Astrology, Tarot & Kabbalah will be published by IBIS books USA this October, the 2nd. book in this series is being written and the completed third volume in 2023. I have also completely revised & edited my 2012 Swedish publication, “The Astrology of Death: Your Birth & Death Horoscope”, and the English version of this ground-breaking book also sees the light of day this year 2022.
This is a good example of the Vesta-Sun contact in my horoscope for this year, total dedication and focus upon the goal of writing and manifestation of my many years’ work in these fields of study.
At birth, the ruler of my Capricorn ASCendant Saturn is conjunct Vesta in the sign of Libra. That means that my Planetary Life Ruler is intimately connected & identified with the energies of Vesta.
What is your Vesta saying on your horoscope?
Vesta signifies a person’s work in terms of the path that one must take in order to fulfil his or her dharma. This focus goes beyond the personal and extends outward to the society and the planet. In the Greek Olympian family, Vesta was the eldest child of Saturn and their affinity is also shown by the fact that they both rule Earth signs, Virgo and Capricorn.
Russian President Putin has Vesta just 1-degree from exact conjunction to his Scorpio ASCendant, while President Zelinsky has also Vesta in Scorpio in dynamic square to his Leo Saturn. Their message of dedication is clear for all to witness. How will these two men integrate & focus themselves when Vesta is positioned in the water sign of Scorpio? Through merging and bonding. Let’s explore what VESTA means in a horoscope.
Clearly Vesta, The Keeper of the Sacred Flame, is associated with the element of Fire and in any birth chart describes our style of dedication and focus, as we commit ourselves to work for a worthy goal.
She is the Priestess of the Flame and Goddess of the Vestal Virgins. VESTA was associated with unmarried temple virgin priestesses who, through sacred sexual religious devotions, brought the fertilizing power of the Moon into effective contact with the lives of human beings.
The Greeks portrayed VESTA as the omphalos, navel or center of the world. The essence of VESTA was embodied in the fire of the hearth at the center the home. So she was worshipped as the Keeper of both the sacred fire & the home fire. Vesta provided a gathering place for the family around the fire. Likewise, Vesta functions as the center of the psyche, coordinating various facets of the personality. Astrologically Vesta symbolizes individuals who are “centered” in their own identity and thus self-determined in their activities. The Latin word for hearth means “to focus” and individuals with strong Vesta possess the ability to concentrate their energies to a point of focus.
But a stressful Vesta on the birth chart would indicate someone who fears to make commitments or is unable to keep them. Basically, she represents our capacity to integrate and focus our energies, and experience wholeness of self. Vesta utilizes the feminine creative energy for personal regeneration and dedication to specific goals and aspirations.
The asteroid VESTA is associated with both the signs of Virgo & Scorpio. This dual rulership over two signs has a historical basis.
In the original zodiacal belt defined by the Assyrian & Babylonian cultures, Scorpio was symbolized by a serpent and directly followed the sign Virgo. What is today called “LIBRA” was contained within the constellation Scorpio.
The Virgo and Scorpio glyphs are similar in design but contain subtle distinctions. In the Virgo glyph the “M” of matter (mother) was turned inward, while the Scorpio “M” of matter (mother) was turned outward. That means the ancient Great Mother Goddess simultaneously manifested as both Virgo Virgin and Scorpio Consort & Magician.
It was with the ascent of the patriarchal culture that Libra, sign of marriage, was placed between Virgo & Scorpio by the ancient Greek astronomers whose society created an artificial duality in a woman’s sexual identity. From then on, a woman was either virgin-chaste before marriage (Virgo) or a sexual consort after marriage (Scorpio).
The Vestal Virgo of the Roman era later evolved into the archetype of the nun – a woman whose sole function was that of work and religious devotion and whose life was total devoid of sexual intimacy and personal relationships. This image has come down to us as the barren spinster or old maid. We can observe from history that as the patriarchy gained power, powerful taboos for women were issued against premarital sex, postmarital infidelity, illegitimate children and abortion. This in turn created an artificial separation between spirituality (Virgo) and sexuality (Scorpio) that has endured for millennia in the collective psyche.
The only difficulty with this description of Vesta is that it does not always hold true in actual horoscope interpretation.
Due to current morality that promotes a Madonna-Whore distinction for women, confusion arises between extremes of sexual denial and sexual freedom. Vesta is most definitely connected to our sexual liberation rebellion, as well as its backlash seen in the spread of sexual diseases. Her emergence corresponds to the moral health issues that surround the sexual interactions of single people.
The original nature of being a “virgin” meant that a woman was whole and complete unto herself, self-contained and self-possessed, therefore self-fulfilled.
A virgin was not barren, but especially fertile as in a virgin forest that has not been violated or depleted. In order to renew their virginity, the vestals bathed in sacred springs. After their sexual encounters, they would withdraw back into themselves to regenerate their inner wholeness.
This explains why a Vesta transit can sometimes point to relationship separations, or, during such periods, the need exists to seek out aloneness in order to renew one’s virginity and rebuild the self in preparation for the next cycle of relating.
The recent discovery of VESTA has given us a means of healing this unhealthy split by reuniting the Virgo-Scorpio themes of this archetype.
Vesta stands holding a lamp of the eternal flame lighting the path as humanity enters into a New Age.

Exploring your personal Myth through Astrology.
The Hero/Heroine is always to be found within ourselves. The adventures of the Hero are those of our own psyche as we journey into the depths & do battle with the subterranean forces – and then come back renewed and victorious.
Deep within us is where new answers can be found and new ideas born.
The Heroic Journey strikes such a deep chord in the lives and imagination of all peoples because we are the Heroes and Heroines of our own life drama and we recognize their journey as ours. Their adventures are the archetypal models for the process of human growth & change.
A potential Parsifal or Pinocchio, Psyche or Cinderella gazes back at us every time we look into the mirror.
To work with a myth and to relate to it meaningfully is to rediscover the unknown, the magic in life. You can do this by searching for the deeper meaning a myth has for you. And to help focus the process we work with the 12 Zodiac signs and the landscape of our own horoscope. And if we want to, we can rewrite our storyline.
